Former 4-star QB Joey Gatewood hopes to rejuvenate career playing new position at Louisville

Joey Gatewood’s journey to Louisville is a long, winding and interesting one.
A former Top 50 national recruit coming out of Jacksonville (FL) Bartram Trail in 2018, the 6’5, 220 Gatewood signed with Auburn where he played two seasons.
Then came a transfer to Kentucky in 2020, but Will Levis emerged as the Wildcats starting quarterback. So Gatewood, beaten out for the starting quarterback position by Levis in Lexington, headed south to Orlando to play for Gus Malzahn at UCF.
In 2021, Gatewood appeared in 10 of 13 games for the Knights, completing 2 of 8 passes for 17 yards and a score, while rushing 28 times for 142 yards and a touchdown. Last season, Gatewood moved to wide receiver, but failed to catch a pass.
Now, the former Under Armour All-American and four-star recruit hopes to rejuvenate his career playing tight end for Jeff Brohm’s Louisville Cardinals.
Though Gatewood’s highlights consist of him playing quarterback, when he gets into the open field and runs he certainly resembles, physically and athletically, of a next level tight end.
